The Digital Publishing Studio’s BSU Athletics App has been named the Best of Festival winnerin the Interactive Multimedia category of the Festival of Media Arts competition held by the Broadcast Education Association. The Broadcast Education Association is the premiere international academic media organization for electronic media educators, students and professionals.
In this year’s competition only 17 entries from a pool of more than 1300 were named Best of Festival winners, placing the BSU Athletics App in the top 1.3 percent of entries. Three students and two faculty members from the Digital Publishing Studio traveled to the 2015 BEA Conference April 12-15 in Las Vegas to accept the award.
BSU Athletics is the official tablet app for interactive annual reports, media guides and more for Ball State University sports. Developed collaboratively by the Department of Journalism, BSU Sports Link and the Department of Athletics, the app takes Cardinal fans behind the scenes of Ball State’s athletic teams. When the app was judged in the BEA competition, it included four teams. The app now features seven BSU teams including men’s basketball, volleyball, and baseball and women’s gymnastics, soccer, volleyball and softball. Each media guide includes game highlights, player profiles, interactive timelines and more. Video galleries include contributions from Ball State Sports Link, the nation’s only fully immersive sports media production program.
The app is designed, developed and updated throughout each season by students in the nationally recognized Journalism Graphics Sequence with collaboration from coaching staffs. The Digital Publishing Studio is led by Jennifer Palilonis, the George & Frances Ball Distinguished Professor of Multimedia Journalism.
“The Digital Publishing Studio provides journalism and telecommunications students with an amazing opportunity to design and develop professional-quality apps that are accessible to a worldwide audience,” Palilonis said. “Working with coaches, players and members of the athletics communication staff offers real-world collaboration that prepares them for exciting careers in digital storytelling and emerging media. That’s better than anything I can offer in the traditional classroom setting.”
